Cascade Brewery

Australia's oldest brewery, Cascade was established in its photogenic location on the southwestern edge of the city centre in 1832. It's still in use today, producing tasty beverages (beer and soft drinks) for nationwide consumption. Brewery tours last 90 minutes, involve plenty of stair climbing, and include thirst-quenching free samples at the end.

Mt Wellington

Hobart is dominated by the 1270m (4165ft) Mt Wellington. There's a web of walking tracks over and around the summit, and the views (when the lowering fog allows) are fabulous. You can take a local bus to the base of the mountain at Fern Tree then enjoy a stunning, five- to six-hour return walk.

Narryna Heritage Museum

Narryna Heritage Museum is housed in a handsome Georgian sandstone mansion and gardens built in 1836. It is set in beautiful grounds and containing a treasure-trove of domestic colonial artefacts including silver, china, furniture and paintings.

Salamanca Place

The row of beautiful sandstone warehouses on the harbourfront at Salamanca Place is a prime example of Australian colonial architecture. Today they have been tastefully developed to house galleries, restaurants, nightspots and shops selling everything from vegetables to antiques. An open-air market is held at Salamanca Place every Saturday morning.

Dating back to the whaling days of the 1830s, these warehouses were the centre of Hobart Town's trade and commerce.

Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery

The excellent Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery incorporates Hobart's oldest building, the Commissariat Store, built in 1808. The museum section features a Tasmanian Aboriginal display and relics from the state's colonial heritage, while the gallery has a good collection of Tasmanian colonial art.
