Belfort
The lively Markt square is always busy, with locals shopping at the morning market, tourists embarking on horse-drawn carriage tours, and drunk visitors celebrating hen and stag nights.
Divert your attention from this action to admire the gabled medieval buildings and the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Belfort (belfry), which, once you climb 366 steps, has great Bruges views. |

Groeningemuseum
This houses one of the most sublime collections of Flemish medieval painting. Unfortunately, a misjudged renovation has visitors wondering why they're viewing art while standing on a dirty white tiled floor. Focus instead on the fantastic Hieronymous Bosch triptych The Last Judgement and the works of Jan Van Eyck. |

Memlingmuseum
Home to masterpieces by Hans Memling (1440-94) and other painters from his time, the museum occupies the restored 12th century St Janshospital. The small collection is wonderful, especially the St Ursula Shrine. |

Onze Lieve Vrouwkerk
Surprisingly, the highlight of the austere gothic Church of our Lady is a small marble statue of Michaelangelo's Madonna brought here by a Bruges merchant during the Renaissance. As the only piece of Michaelangelo's to ever leave Italy, its certainly worth a look. |

St Salvatorskathedraal
The 13th century St Saviour's Cathedral is the city's oldest church. Recently renovated, its exterior with its 99m (325ft) neo-Romanesque tower is much more impressive than the bare interior which contains embossed choir stalls and 1731 tapestries. |
