Akita Kenritsu Bijutsukan (Art Museum)

Akita Kenritsu Bijutsukan was opened in May 1967, and consists of exhibition rooms and a fine arts hall. The present facility was refurbished in April 1998. The exhibits center on works by Western-style painter Tsuguharu Fujita and collected by Masakichi Hirano, a strong supporter of Fujita. The collection includes 101 of Fujita's works and some 600 works in total. The Masakichi Hirano Bijutsukan Foundation was founded to care for the works he donated. Many local citizens also use the fine art hall as a gallery in which to present their own original works.

Akita Kenritsu Kindai Bijutsukan (Museum of Modern Art)

Akita Kenritsu Kindai Bijutsukan is located within Akita Furusato-mura Kamakura Land (Akita Heritage Village Kamakura Land) in the city of Yokote, Akita Prefecture. The museum is built on a small hill, and its glass exterior is designed to reflect changing views of the sky, making the building appear to be floating in the air. Works held at the museum include Western-style Akita Ranga (paintings of Akita orchids), painted in this region since the 18th century, and works by such artists as Kogyo Terasaki, Suian Hirafuku, Hyakusui and his son, and Toyoshiro Fukuda, all of whom have a close connection to Akita Prefecture. An exhibition zone called Geijutsu-no Mori (Forest of Art) extends into the area around the museum and is the setting for around 30 sculptures.
