Begijnhof
Catharinastraat, Breda - Netherlands
The Begijnhof in Breda was built in 1531, and was, until very recently, one of the only Hofjes in the Netherlands that was still used by Beguines (women who devote their life to prayer and serving God). The Begijnhof was recently given over to elderly women, however some of them look after the St Catherinakerk – a small 19th century chapel located at the rear of the hofje. Others still tend the herb garden which has served the hofje for several hundred years. |

Breda Museum
Parade 12, Breda - Netherlands
The Breda Museum is located on Parade 12 in Breda – it holds a collection of items which are related to the history and culture of the town. The museum attracted a lot of attention in 2003, when it found a ’forgotten’ painting believed to have been an early work by Vincent Van Gogh, which had been unrecognised for many years after it had been given away by his mother. The painting, ’Houses in The Hague’ was found when the museum was researching pieces for an exhibition to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Van Gogh’s birth. |

The Grote Kerk, or Great Church, in Breda is a small but impressive building, with a short nave high roof which gives an impression of a much bigger building. The church dates back to the 15th century. The end of the south aisle features a large St Christopher, and there are a number of murals which have been recently uncovered that show how bright and grand the decorations in the church had been prior to the Reformation. |
