Aqua Zoo Friesland is located just outside Leeuwarden. It is a natural animal park that is devoted to water-dwelling animals. It has a variety of species, coming from the sea, rivers, lakes, and swamps. Visitors get a chance to get close to seals, pelicans, flamingos, beavers, and penguins, as well as many other fascinating animals, in areas much like their natural habitats. The Aqua Zoo Friesland is constantly updating their habitats, and is a great place to visit with younger children.

The Boomsma museum and visitor centre is located in the centre of Leeuwarden. The museum explains how a distillery works, and takes visitors back to the 1930s to reveal the traditional process used by the Boomsma family to make the herb-flavoured gin that is a regional speciality. The museum displays a number of items used in the distilling process, including vessels, fill machines and a ‘nosing turntable’. There is also a tasting room where you can sample some of the gin yourself.

The Frsk Letterkundich Museum (Frisian Literary Museum) is located on Grote Kerkstraat in Leeuwarden. The building that houses the museum was once the home of local heroine Mata Hari. The museum displays a large collection of Frisian documents, and a number of pamphlets in English detailing the Frisian language. There is also a permanent display relating to P.J. Troelstra, a Frisian socialist politician and poet.

The Frisian Museum of Natural History was founded in 1923 by a group of nature lovers from Leeuwarden. The museum is presently housed in the Niewstat Weeshuis, a historical building that served as an orphanage from 1675 to 1958. The museum is devoted to the local environment, and has displays covering a variety of subjects. Visitors learn about local plant and animal life, farming (including how to milk a cow), and even get to see a skeleton of a sperm whale that was beached in 1994.

The Grote Kerk in Leeuwarden is also known as the Jacobijner Kerk. The church has been recently restored, although it still has a noticeable tilt due to subsidence, wih the entire structure leaning towards the newer south aisle. Visitors can see some remnants of the sixteenth century frescoes which have been preserved and moved to the new southern aisle. There is also a monument to the wartime Jewish community at the front of the church.

The Princessehof Museum specialises in ceramics and china from all over the world. It is the only museum fully specialising in this subject in the Netherlands. The museum building was once the City Palace of Maria Louise van Hessen Kassel, who lived during the 18th century. The museum has been recently refurbished, and was officially re-opened by Prince Willem Alexander and Princess Maxima. The museum has exhibits and activities suitable for all age groups.

The Verzets Museum Freisland is a museum devoted to the Second World War, and the choices that had to be made by those who lived through it. The theme of the museum is ’choosing, then and now’, and the museum remembers those who lost their lives in the Frisian resistance. There is an ’Open Depot’ where visitors can look at, and even try out, some of the exhibits. The museum explains an important story to younger generations, and serves as an important reminder to us all.

The Waag, or, Weigh House in Leeuwarden is located on the Market Square. It was constructed in 1670, and was used to weigh cheese for the weekly cheese market. The building has been converted into a museum, and now displays exhibits related to the cheese making process, along with information on other local crafts such as pottery and tile painting. It also has a store selling several varieties of cheese. The cheese market still takes place just outside the Waag, every Thursday morning.
