The Africa Centre is a short walk from Cadier-En-Keer, joust outside of Maastricht. It is housed in the HQ of the African Missionaries Society, and contains a collection of West African artefacts, including masks, jewellery and statues. The collection comes from a number of different tribes, and certain items date back to the thirteenth century. The museum gives visitors an idea how African people have lived in the past, and also touches on life in Africa in modern times.

The American War Cemetary is a moving memorial to all of the American servicemen who were killed in the Dutch and Beligan campaigns of World War II. The centre piece of the cemetary is a stone quadrangle which records the 8,000 names of the soldiers who died from 1944 – 1945, along with a small visitors room containing photographs and narrative describing the events that occurred in the run up to the German surrender.

The Bonnefanten Museum is an art museum located in Maastricht. It is named after the Bonnefanten monastery, in which it was previously housed. Today, the museum inhabits a modern building on the banks of the Maas. The new building was designed by the architect Aldo Rossi. Inside the museum there are a number of works by the old masters, along with some contemporary fine art by members of the Minimal Art and Arte Provera movements.

The Centre Ceramique is located near the Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht. It is housed in a huge modern building, with Euro symbols studded into the paving stones. The building is home to the European Journalism Centre, as well as the city library and archives. It offers free internet access in its computer workshops. The Centre has a cafe and restaurant, and runs a number of temporary exhibitions throughout the year.

The Drielandenpunt is a graffiti-covered concrete block to the east of Maastricht which symbolises the place where the borders of the countries of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands meet. The Drielandenpunt is in quite a bare area, although there is also a labyrinth and an observation tower there, which make for an interesting visit if you happen to be nearby. The town which houses the block is known as Vaals, and is the highest point in the Netherlands, at 321M above sea level.

The Kazematten, or, Casemates, can be found in Waldeck park in Maastricht. They are fine examples of the impressive fortifications that the city created between 1575 and 1925. They were used to stage surprise attacks on the enemy during times of siege. The two Casemates in Waldeck Park are the only ones which have survived. Guided tours will take you through a small section of the passeges, which cover a 10 KM area. It is believed that d’Artagnan, known as the 4th Musketeer, was killed in one of these passages in 1673.

The Museumkelder Derlon is located on Plankstraat in Maastricht. It is a small museum, housed in the basement of a hotel, and preserves the remains of a temple to Jupiter – one of the few remnants of Roman Maastricht. The remains were discovered just before the hotel was built in the mid 1980s. Jupiter is the son of Saturn and brother of Neptune. He was considered the Patron god of Rome, and his temple was the official place of state business.

The Onze Lieve Vrouwe Basiliek is an 11th century church in Maastricht. It has a strongly fortified west front, with small slits for windows. It is a dark, stern church compared to most of the Protestant churches in Maastricht, with a vaulted Gothic nave and a Romanesque base. The church Treasury holds a collection of relgious items, including the dalmatic of St Lambert, a bishop who was apparently murdered by a local noble in the year 705.

The Spanish Government House is a 16th century building with an interesting Renaissance arcade. Inside the building there are a number of period rooms furnished in local Liege-Maastricht style, along with some rooms with Dutch and French decorations. There are a number of exhibits including statues and figurines, some seventeenth century paintings, and several examples of applied art and pottery. The arcade features carved medallions with portraits of Isabelle of Portugal, a young Philip II, and Charles V.

St Janskerk is a fourteenth century Protestant church in Maastricht. It is the main protestant church in the town, and once served as the baptistry of St Servaaskerk, when that church was a cathedral. Today, the St Janskerk is almost as appealing to visitors, as it has an impressive fifteenth century Gothic style tower, and some interesting medieval murals. The tower is open to visitors during the summer months, and offers great views of the surrounding area.

The St Servaaskerk is a church devoted to St Servaas. The church dates back to 950, and was built on the site where he was buried in the year 384. Of the original construction, only the crypt and tomb remains. The rest of the building is now of medieval construction, with a Gothic cloister and treasury, which holds numerous religious artefacts dating from 890 onwards, including copperwork and crucifixes. Other interesting parts of the church include the 13th century Bergportaal which was used as the main entrance during services.

Zonneberg

The Zonneberg is one of the more interesting cave systems near Maastricht. It is located on the southern outskirts of the town, on the far side of the 110 meter high St Pietersberg hill. The cave systems have been gradually created over time as sandstone has been quarried out of the hillside. There were more than 20,000 passages, but only a few thousand are still accessible today. Some of them were used as air raid shelters during World War II. Visitors can explore the caves with the aid of a local guide.
