Molde – Roses and Jazz!

Molde – Roses and Jazz!
Molde lies facing south on the Romsdalsfjord and is renowned for its beautiful surroundings and splendid view of the Molde panorama, with its 222 partially snow-clad peaks.  For more than a hundred years Molde has been known as the ”Town of Roses” on account of its luxuriantly flowering rose-gardens. The Molde International Jazz Festival “Moldejazz”, is staged every summer, attracting many famous artists and lively throngs of jazz enthusiasts. The Bjørnson Festival attracts internationally recognised authors to Molde.

The Trollstigen Road and the Atlantic Road

The Trollstigen Road and the Atlantic Road

Trollstigen - the “Troll Ladder” is the most visited tourist road in Norway. The road twists through 11 hairpin bends as it climbs up to Stigrøra (858 metres above sea level). In some places it is cut into the mountain; in others it is built on top of stone walls. An impressive bridge in natural stone, carries it across the Stigfossen waterfall.

The Atlantic Road, zigzags across bridges and rock-fills from island to island right out at the ocean’s edge.  It is easy to park your car in one of the many lay-bys and walk a few metres to the smooth coastal rocks and some excellent fishing spots. A stone’s throw or two to the west the shipping lane crosses

Eikesdalen and Mardalsfossen
Eikesdalen and Mardalsfossen
The long Eikesdalsvatnet (lake) lies just 26 metres above sea level, while the surrounding mountains tower to heights of 1,500 to 1,800 metres straight up from the lake. The Mardalsfossen waterfall cascades 297 metres down into the valley and is the fourth highest waterfall in the world (the whole waterfall is 655 m). The waterfall is an impressive sight in the period when the water is released by the hydroelectricity company - from 20th June to 20th August each year.

The fishing villages Ona and Bud

The fishing villages Ona and Bud
Norway’s southernmost, and still-functioning as a traditional fishing village with a permanent population of 50-60. This small island community has its own shop, a small café, several places to stay and two pottery workshops. The Ona lighthouse (1867) is painted red, 15 metres tall and stands on Onakalven, the highest point on the island.
In the 16th and 17th century Bud was the biggest trading post between Bergen and Trondheim. Today, Bud is still an active and charming fishing village with several good fish restaurants.
