Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak
Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak rose from under the sea in a volcanic eruption about 100,000 years ago. Located on the eastern end of Jejudo Island, there is a huge crater at the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak. The crater is about 600m in diameter and 90m high. With the 99 sharp rocks surrounding the crater, it looks like a gigantic crown. While the southeast and north sides are cliffs, the northwest side is a hill with grass that is connected to the Seongsan Village. The ridge is good for walks and for horse riding as well. The sunrise from the crater is magnificent. Also the Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak between the bright yellow colored rapeseed flowers in the spring is a sight that must be seen. |

Sanbanggulsa Grotto
It is said that the peak of Mt.Hallasan where Baekrokho Lake now exists was taken off and thrown away, which then became Mt. Sanbangsan. The myth describes how unlike other mountains on Jejudo Island, this mountain does not have a crater. The 5m-high rock cave at the cliff on the southwest side of the mountain was originally called Sanbanggul Cave, but it is called a temple now because it possesses a Buddhist statue. This is where monk Hye-Il (964~1053) had lived during the Goryeo Dynasty (918~1392) Inside the cave, you can see Marado Island and the Dragon Head Coast. You can also see small ponds being made by the water drops that fall from the ceiling all through the year. The plant zone on a cliff of Mt. Sanbangsan is also designated as a natural monument. It is the only place on Jejudo Island where island boxwoods grow. On the Dragon Head Coast is the Hamel Memorial Monument. |

Yongmeori Beach is a place where Mt. Sanbangsan stretches into the ocean and it looks as if a dragon’s head is going underwater. This area is made of Sa-am stacks, built up over millions of years. There are Gulbangs here which are depressed into the shape of rooms, and wide rocks stacking up on one another along the seashore cliffs which create a majestic scenery by the sea. Along the road down to the seashore, there is the Hamel Castaway Memorial, in remembrance of Hamel who drifted to this place in 1653, and to the rightside of the beach, there is soft and dark sandy beach. You can meet the women sea-divers of Jeju who sell sea cucumbers and stroll on the road that spreads along the seashore. |

Seongeup Folk Village
Located at the foot of Mt. Halla, Seongeup Folk Village has perfectly preserved Korean tradition. With its vast amount of cultural property, this place is designated as a Folk Village. Many cultural properties such as residential houses, Confucian shrines and schools, ancient government offices, stone statues, millstones (run by horse or ox), fortress ruins, and stone monuments, and intangible cultural assets such as folk plays, native foods, local folk craftsmanship, and the local dialect are handed down to date. The several-hundred-year-old zelkova trees and nettle trees standing in the middle of the village are designated as natural monuments. Wandering around this area, you will feel as if you travled back to the past. It is a popular place for foreigners to experience the unique Korean native culture. Located on Jeju-do Island, Seongeup Folk Village shows the unique residential culture of the island; the poorly made windscreen stone wall (black lava rock), the straight but curvy Ollae (narrow alley) to block the wind, and the stone statues which have become the prime feature of the landscape. The local black-haired pigs and tongsi (pigsty / restroom) are especially well-known indigenous products. The local pigs, which feed on human feces, are very nutritious and famous for their great tasting meat. These traditions, which cannot be seen elsewhere today, make the Folk Village a novel experience. |

Marado Island
Marado is a small island situated at the southern end of Korea. It is about 11 km away to the south from Moseulpo Harbor in Daejeong-eup. Marado Island is 4.2 km long, but only 39 m at its widest, shaped like a sweet potato, and inhabitants fish and provide Minbak (homestay) for tourists for a living. Because there is no water in Marado Island, they get their water from gathering rain water, and they use solar cells to generate what electricity they have. In 1883, three families first came to the island and began living here. At first they lived off the food growing there, but once the food became scarce, they burned the mountain thick with trees to create field for farming. It was said that all the snakes and frogs died in that fire, and thus no snakes and frogs are found in Marado Island even until now. The island is famous for sea fishing. There is a ferry to Marado Island once or twice a day from Moseulpo Harbor. |

Seopjikoji is located at the end of the eastern shore of Jeju-do Island. "Seopji" is the old name for the area, and "Koji" is Jeju dialect meaning a sudden bump on land. Green fields without a single tree spreads beyond the cliff and a rock called “seondol” is protruded. Also there are stonewalls along the road to block the wind on the way to the lighthouse at the end of Seopjikoji. Within the stonewalls, you may find the most brilliant rapeseed flower fields every April. Going up the metal steps of the lighthouse, you can view the whole seashore at a glance. On the Koji hill, there stands a stone Bongsudae (4 m high, 9 m long and wide) that retains its original form. |

Manjanggul Cave
Manjanggul Cave is one of the finest lava tunnels in the world, and is a designated natural monument. A lava tunnel is formed when the lava that was deep in the ground spouts from the peak and flows to the surface. Manjanggul Cave has a variety of interesting structures inside including 70cm lava stalagmites and the lava tube tunnels. Only 1km of the 13,422m Manjanggul Cave is open to the tourists. The inside of the tunnel sustains at a temperature of 11~21℃, creating a comfortable atmosphere. There are rare animals such as bats living in the tunnel, which makes this tunnel valuable for researchers as well. The stone pillars and stalactites are widely spread and the tunnels shows off the cave’s topographical features. The Stone Turtle is especially eye-catching because it is shaped like Jeju-do Island. |

Udo Maritime Park
Udo Island is an island at the east end of Jeju Island. It is called Udo because its shape resembles that of a cow that is lying down or sticking out its head. The circumference of Udo Island is 17km and there are about 700 houses and 1800 residents who live on farming and fishing. Udo Island is the biggest island among the many islands that surround Jejudo Island – its land is furtile, it has abundant fishing farms, and is a great place to visit. Udo Island can also give you the impression that you are seeing a miniaturized Jeju island when you see Jeju women divers, stone streets, stone tombs and very similar traditional culture and natural environments. If you go up to the top of island to Udobong Peak. you can see the entire Jejudo island including Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak (a famous spot for sunrises). In northern Jejudo, in order to protect the natural environment and promote tourism, two of the harbor areas and the seashore area have been designated as Udo Maritime Park.
You can enjoy fishing all over the island, and you can visit the whole island in 2-3 hours on a bicycle. |

Hyeopjae Beach is located on the west side of Hanrim-eup, and is part of the Hanrim Park. Its white sand has a lot of fine seashell power mixed into it, and just off the beach is Biyangdo Island. The long seashore is 9 km long and has evergreen forests and cobalt color sea water scattered here and there, making the scenery very beautiful. The white sandy beach is about 20 meters long, and its water is 1.2 m deep with no sudden drops – it is a fit place for vacationing families. Many convenience facilities are available, and in the evergreen forest area, overnight camping is allowed. The Hanrim Park nearby has a subtropical arboretum, Hyeopjaegul cave, and Ssangyonggul Cave, which provide interesting tour sites. The seashore to the southwest of the Hyeopjae Beach connects to another beach called Geumreung Beach, and both beaches combined are also called Hyeopjae Beach as well. From any beach on Jejudo Island, you can always see Mt. Hallasan. |

Sangumburi Crater
Sangumburi is a crater with a circumference of over 2 km, designated as Natural Monument. It is located on the southeast side of Jeju-si, and is a flat crater, about 650 meters wide, 100 meters deep, and 2,070 meters in circumference. If you look at the crater from above up, it looks like a man-made circular stadium. There is a variety of plant-life in the crater. On the north side, Nandaeseong vegetation such as red-thorn trees, and magnolia trees grow, along with the rare winter strawberries. On the south side of the crater, Ondaerim vegetation such as evergreens, maples, and mountain strawberry trees cover the area. Because so many different kinds of trees and plants grow in such a limited space, it attracts he attention of researchers as well. |

Jeongbangpokpo Waterfall is the only water fall in Asia that falls directly into the ocean. On the wall of the water fall, there is an inscription written “Seobulgwacha”, referring to Seobul passing by this place. Seobul was a servant of the Chinese Emperor Jin (BC 259~210) who was ordered by the Emperor to find the substance that would make him immortal. Seogwipo is also said to have gotten its name to mean Seobul headed back west. Jeongbang Waterfall is situated by a high cliff by the sea, and an old evergreen stands there leaning back as if it would fall into the ocean. Go east for about 300 meters and you will see another waterfall called Sojeongbang Waterfall. It is a great place to relax during the summer. There is an observatory at the top of the cliff, from which you can command a fine view of the sea. |

Jungmun Resort is a multi tourism area of Jejudo Island and the largest resort in Korea. It is located on the seashore of Jungmun area in Seogwipo. Its facilities blend in beautifully with its surrounding nature, and in 1971, it was designated an International Tour Site. In the Resort, there are many interesting sites to visit, such as Pacific Land, Yeomiji Arboretum, fishing village for tourists, Seonimgyo Bridge, Cheonjeyeon waterfall, and Jungmun Beach. Also there are great hotels such as Shilla Hotel, Lotte Hotel, and the Hyatt Hotel that are internationally well known because celebrities often visit from abroad. This is the biggest Tourist complex in Korea. The seashore of the Jungmun Tourist Complex (Jungmun Resort) is especially beautiful, and it is often used as a shooting location for movies, dramas, and commericials. A bench in the garden of Shilla Hotel was used in the movie 'Swiri'and the area has become known as 'Swiri Hill.' Yeomiji Arboretum is also a must-see travel spot. This arboretum has 2,000 kinds of rare plants in the greenhouse, and 1,700 kinds of flowers and trees outside. A tour tain can be used between the arboretum and the garden, and if you go up to the sky lounge in the middle of the garden, you can see the whole arboretum. On a clear day, you can even see Marado Island in the distance. |

Cheonjeyeon Falls Cheonjeyeon Waterfall, named 'The pond of God', consists of 3 parts. Around the falls, there are rare plants such as ‘solipnan’ reeds. There is a cave in the east and from the ceiling cold water pours down creating the waterfall. The water from the first waterfall becomes the second and third waterfalls and flows into the sea. In Cheonjeyeon Valley, there is the “Seonimgyo Bridge”( Arch bridge that has 7 nymphs carved on the side) and the octagonal “Cheonjeru tower”. The Seonimgyo is also called “Chilseonyeogyo”(meaning seven nymphs) and it connects Cheonjeyeon with the Jungmum Tourist Complex. On the surface of the Cheonjeru Tower, there is a painting that tells Cheonjeyeon’s legend of the nymph and mountain god. Every even-year in May, the Chilseonyeo Festival is held here. |

Yongduam Rock
Yongduam is a volcanic rock that was created from an eruption about two million years ago. It is 10 m high, and 30 m long. It is named so because of the legend that a dragon (“yong”) living in his dragon palace tried to ascend to the heavens and got stuck. Because the shape of the rock resembles the shape of the dragon’s head, it is called Yongduam. The rock now has only its body parts, because during a heavy storm a while ago, the head part of the rock was hit with lightening and fell off. About 200 meters to the east of Yongduam is Yongyeon (Dragon’s pond). Again, the pond is so named because it was said that the dragon used to play there. The water is so clean you can see the bottom of the pond. |

Mt.Hallasan is a short climbing course. Less than 10km in length, it is possible to reach the peak and come back down in one day. But the weather conditions often change and there is a lot of wind, so you must be well prepared before going up the mountain. |

Tamna Mokseokwon exhibits trees and rocks with certain unique values. It is a private tourist area with exhibits and stories created with trees by naming the displayed objects that befit their characteristics, such as Gosamok(the dead tree) the Jorok tree, or naming them according to the shape of the roots. The Gosamok tree grows on Mt.Hallasan only under 770m above sea level and the wood is solid, which allow people to make it into combs. Twenty of the exhibited Jorok trees were designated as local cultural assets and 1,000 others are exhibited in various art figures. There are about 500 pieces of rock which have the shapes of human heads. The exhibited and preserved natural rocks have been collected one by one from 1960. In the exhibits, rocks of different types can be seen: which are generally found from the beaches about 4km west or east of the Seoguipo Beophwanri Beach. |

Jeju Folk Museum is a public museum which carries many folk treasures of Jeju island’s inhabitants. All the exhibit items are real items that were used by people in the past. The first floor has a special exhibition room, and second and third floors have permanent exhibitions. The museum preserves about 10,000 artifacts, and ones we can actually see in display are about 3,000, such as folk instruments made of bamboo, dry rice-straws, and rocks. You can also see tools used by Jeju Island’s female sea divers, the clothes they wore gong into the sea, and maetdol (millstone) they used. You can see fascinating items related to local religions, preserved from the old times, or ones involving old traditions of the area, and visit straw-roofed houses. Especially eye-catching sights are the traditional Jeju costume Galot, and Aegigudeok (baby’s cradle), the musical instrument “Ulsoe”, made up of five kinds of mirrors, and “Dorongi”, rain coat made of straw. The most eye-catching item, however, is the Sun-dial. Made for a single person to carry, it is extremely rare item. When you go out to the outdoor exhibition area, you can see many faces in a row. These are the “Jeju Mushin Gung” statues. At this place, you can witness the 143 Mushin statues which have been handed down from long ago. The “Mushin”s are gods that Jeju people believed would bring them happiness if they prayed to them with all their heart. These Mushins are recognized internationally as valuable artistic treasures, and sometimes the local people still visit and hold sacrificial ceremonies. If you get lucky, you may get to witness one of these ceremonies while you are there. |

Located at the western end of Jejudo Island, Suwolbong, a small mountaintop, is famous for being a favorite sunset viewing place. The top the hexagonal pavilion Suwoljeong, from where you can look down on all sides. From this pavilion, you can see all of the West Sea. To the north, off the coast, is the Chagwido (sometimes called Jukdo) Island, where only the top peak area has grass growing, and the rest of the island is made up of dark hyeonmuam rocks and cliffs. Chagwido is famous as a fishing place, and in January, March, June, and December, people come here to fish. Around sunset time, Chagwido’s the seashore of turning red along with the sun is truly an awesome sight to behold. |

Designated as a natural monument, Bijarim Forest has a group of about 2,800 Bija trees which are 500∼800 years old. They are 7~14m high, with diameters ranging from 50~110cm, and is the largest bija forest in the world. This forest is presumed to have formed when the bija seeds were flown around the area during the sacrificial rites to the gods. In the middle of the forest is an 800-year-old tree, the oldest tree on Jeju-do Island. The tree is 25m high and has a girth of 6m and is called the ancestor tree of the Bija trees. There are rare orchids and plants growing in the forest. In the past, the bija tree blossoms and the Bija oil were used as insecticides. In 1992, Jejudo Island renovated a walkway at this site for the citizens and tourists to enjoy forest walks through the wonderful forest. |

Jeju Racecourse
Jeju Racecourse is situated at the base of Mt. Hallasan, 450 m above sea level, with a great view of Baekrokdam and the ocean. It was first set up to protect the Jeju Horse (Natural Monument #347) in 1990. It is open around the year to provide space for excursions, picnic parties and exercises. Its main facilities are the racetrack made of sand which is 1,600m in length and 20m in width, examination hall where you can see the conditions of the horses before the race, spectators’ floors from 3rd basement floor to the ground floor, holding 3000 persons per floor, 100 monitors, 100 ticket desks, information desks and a free parking lot which can hold 2000 cars. From July to August, races are held between 4:25 PM~9:20 PM. In the vicinity is the Eoksae Flower Garden which is so beautiful that it is the subject of the “Jeju Eoksae Flower Festival” |

Hallim Park, located western 33km away from Jeju-si and west of Mt. Hallasan along the beach in Hallimeup, is one of the most popular tourist spots on Jeju Island. It faces the pleasant scenery of Biyangdo Island, Hyeopjae Beach and Geumneung Beach. The park was established on barren land in Hyeopjaeri, Hallimeup, and covered with tons of earth and began planting assorted subtropical plants in early 1971.
Hallim Park, almost 100 thousand square meters, has a variety of gardens that can be enjoyed in any season. Visitors can enjoy checking out Palm Tree Road, Jeju Stone and Bonsai Garden, Water Garden, Subtropical Botanic Garden and much more. The most famous tourist sites in Hallim Park are Hyeopjaegul and Ssangyonggul Caves known to be the only two-dimensional caves in the world. In addition, a folk village, children's amusement park and outdoor resort facilities make it enjoyable for both children and adults. |

Jeju Folklore & Natural History Museum has currently on exhibition folklore remains and natural historical materials of Jeju-do that were excavated in Jeju-do and displayed in 1984.
The museum is divided into 4 exhibition halls: the Natural History Hall, the Folklore Exhibition Hall Ⅰ, the Folklore Exhibition Hall Ⅱ, and the Outdoor Exhibition.
The Natural History Exhibition Hall displays mainly natural historical items such as marine life, soil and rocks, and fauna and flora of Jeju in a three-dimensional way and gives visitors a better understanding of Jeju’s unique nature and culture. It is divided into an Ecology Hall of Marine Life, a Soil and Rock Exhibition Hall, and a Land Ecosystem Hall.
In the Folklore Exhibition Hall I, you will see a transformation in lifestyles of Jeju-do Island as well as Jeju people when you look at 2,381 display items. It also plays a very important role to visitors in helping them to understand the ancient life styles on Jeju Island by recapturing Jeju’s traditional housing architecture, rites of passage, and regional food specialties.
The Folklore Exhibition Hall Ⅱ exhibits diving gear used by Haenye (women divers) and farming tools used by farmers in Jeju-do. In addition, 100 items including traditional tools for daily living, ritual materials, diverse stone structures made by volcanic rock of Jeju-do are exhibited in this outdoor exhibition. |

Mt. Hallasan is also known as Baeknokdam, as the legend recalls that immortals from heaven came down to ride on white deers (baeknok). With a circumference of 2,000m and a depth of 100m, climbing Mt. Hallasan allows you to see virtually all of the island Jeju. With a height of 1950m, it is the highest mountain in South Korea. The now dormant volcano once erupted in the 4th Cenozoic era. It is composed of whinestones and its mountain range spreads from the center to east and west of Jeju Island. The southern slope is steep compared to the gentle slopes in the north, east and west. At the top of the mountain, there is a crater called Baeknokdam (3km in circumference, diameter of 500m) surrounded by 360 parastic cones, such as Heukbulgeunoreum, Saraoreum, Sungneoloreum and Euseungsaengoreum. Even at the top of a hill you will experience pleasure, as if you are floating in the sky. Mt. Hallasan is designated as natural monument no. 182. Yeongshil Hiking Course is usually crowded with visitors, therefore it is recommended to take the Gwaneumsa or Seongakpan Trail. As Mt. Hallasan becomes dark even before 6p.m., those who intend to climb to the top should start hiking before 9a.m. Buses taking the 516 highway depart every 15 minutes (from 6a.m.) from the terminal and 1100 highway bus departs every 80 minutes (from 6:30a.m.), therefore, it is recommended to take public transportation. |

Haenyeo refers to female divers who dive into the ocean water to gather various shellfish, seaweeds, etc, without using any underwater diving equipment. When diving underwater, the haenyeo carries only a pair of goggles, a round ball-like tube to keep her balance, and a basket to put her collections in. Such women involved in activities in the fishery industry are known to be scattered all around Jeju-do, Korea, Japan, and Russia.
Jeju-do has established the Jeju Haenyeo Museum to introduce to the world Jejudo’s unique activities and culture of the haenyeo female divers. Exhibition Hall 1 is entitled “Haenyeo Diver’s Life” and has a restoration of a traditional haenyeo’s home, and her meals. Also on display are these female diver’s various utensils to show a more realistic view into their daily life.
Exhibition Hall 2 displays haenyeo divers’ goggles and fishing spheres they sometimes use underwater. Her traditional working outfit is also on display along with various historical records and haenyeo-related materials.
Exhibition Hall 3 has an underwater theme called “The Sea” and displays the fishery industry’s culture. Traditional fishnets and fishery equipment are on display including small ship models and salt farm models.
The Jeju Haenyeo Museum exhibits various photos of haenyeo female divers and their activities to provide an accurate picture of their lives. The Jeju Haenyeo Museum also has an observatory from where visitors can see an excellent view of the Hado-ri area, which has a garden with various sculptures and a resting area. The first floor lobby has a souvenir shop where visitors can purchase various souvenirs related to haenyeo female divers. |

Bunjae Artpia first opened its doors at Jeju’s Bunjae Artpia in July of 1992, and is the world’s largest botanical garden with a landscape of approximately 39,700m². This garden is rich with trees as old as 300 years and as young as 30 years including an assortment of maple trees, wisterias, pine trees, and about 100 types of rare trees. The garden posses approximately 1,700 trees, and also boasts of its 100,000 Jeju wild flowers, orchids, and other various garden trees and plants which form a unique scenic harmony, Bunjae Artpia is annually visited by approximately 300,000 people, and is also a popular tour site for world public figures such as China’s Head of State Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, Japan’s former Prime Minister Nakasone, and more.
The rich variety of trees planted on the 39,700m² landscape is representative of 700 years of Korea’s botanical history. The 100 years old Jeju’s indigenous Hwangpi elm tree and a 300 years old yew tree are the main highlight of Bunjae Artpia. Also, Jeju’s characteristic stonewalls and ponds along with stone bridges, and artificial waterfalls beautifies the garden in various locations, which adds to the richness of Bunjae Artpia’s scenery.
Subsidiary facilities include a large Korean restaurant, Yooyeon, which seats 202 persons and overlooks Bunjae Artpia. The restaurant is opened all year round from 11AM – 2PM, and offers a lunch buffet. The menu includes Jeju’s specialties such as braised mackerels (godeungeo-jorim), spicy pan-fried pork and vegetables (jeyuk-bokkeum), and numerous side dishes. |
