Keelung belongs to northern Taiwan, with mountains surrounding on three sides, while Dunghai (The Esatern Sea) in its north front. Serving as a natural harbor with immense water, Keelung has its bay cut into downtown deeply. Within the city are much more slopes than planes, and moreover, the protective Keelung Islet and Hoping Islet screen on both sides of the water. These factors mentioned above have contributed to this natural and strategically difficult point, which combines roles of commercial, military, and fishing harbor, yet most importantly, keeps guard at the gates of the whole Taipei area. Famous foods in Keelung include the night market in front of the temple gate, Lienjen Cake Store, Lihu Cake Store, and Taiyanggu (Sun Valley) Honey Store

Farm/Scenery

Nuandong Valley

Nuandong Valley (literally, Warm Winter Valley) is located in Dongshih Keng, Nuanhuan District, southeast of Keelung City. There are river swiftly running across, trees towering around, and peculiar cliff landscapes, making the valley an ideal summer resort. Huosaoliu, upstream, is the place with the highest rainfall in Taiwan. The forest in the valley is complete, with scaly tree-fern the major species. The air is clean and the river is clear, so it is suitable for family visits. It is also an ideal place for watching butterflies, especially the three-spot grass yellow butterfly.

The trails alongside the riverbanks are 2 itineraries. One runs along the cliff, allowing visitors to appreciate the splendid hanging cliff over the river valley. Another spreads next to the valley and connects with the red-brick trail, near a drawing bridge where visitors can see the refreshing and delicate landscapes, which accompanied by the murmuring stream allow one to forget all the troubles in the real world.

Waimu Shan Seashore Bikeway

Waimu Shan seashore is the longest natural seashore remaining in Keelung City with a length of 5 kilometers from Waimu Shan fishing port to Aoditong Village. With the open seashore on one side and towering marine cliffs on the other, the coastal scenery is spectacular. As the only remaining sandy seashore in Keelung, the beach near Aoditong Village is small but magnificent. In summer, people go to the beach and have fun swimming. The nearby Octopus Swimming Pool is also a great choice for some fun for people who are afraid to swim in the sea. The sunrise at sea in summer is a view not to be missed. It is always refreshing to listen to the sound of the crashing waves and watching the changes of colorful clouds. The seashore and the reef rocks sculptured by the ocean over a long period of time are also a must-see.

Situated in the scenic waterfront area of Waimu Shan, the enclosed 3m wide 1.2 km long Waimu Shan Bikeway is the first tourist bikeway ever built in Keelung. Visitors can walk, jog and ride freely and safely within this closed tourist bikeway to enjoy the caress of the sea breeze. As the bikeway is just next to the coastal highway, visitors can look over the Keelung Isle on the great green sea and at the cargo ships at sea or waiting to berth at the Keelung Harbor to unload their cargo. Walking or riding on the bikeway will surely help you relieve the stress of everyday life.

Visitors can get to the seashore from the path next to the bikeway car park to enjoy fishing, listen to the crashing waves, and watch the reef rocks sculptured by the ocean over a long period of time. Jhongjheng Park is situated on the side of Ta Sha Wan Shan, which is at the east of Keelung City. There is a white statue of Goddess of Mercy in the park. This 25-meter high statue has become one of the characteristics of Keelung.

The park overlooks Keelung City and the harbor. Jhongjheng Park was called Kang Park in the past. There are three levels in the park. On the first level is a historic canon fort. The statue of Goddess of Mercy is the landmark of Jhongjheng Park. It is the biggest Goddess statue in Southeast Asia. Inside the statue is a stairway leading to the top. Chu Pu Tan is where worshipers gather on Chung Yuan Festival. The first immigrants to Taiwan used to fight with each other for land. In order to stop the disputes, they set up a temple for yearly worship. The temple was in Kao Sha Park during the Japanese occupation and moved to Jhongjheng Park.

HoPing Island was called Liao Island in the past. It is located at the north of Taiwan. Ho Ping Bridge connects the island to Keelung City. In 1626, the Spanish army built castles, churches and fortresses, preparing to do business with China and Japan. The castle on the southwest is called San Salvador, the saint savior. Ershawan Fort was built in 1840 and there are a number of replica cannons marking the original gun emplacements. The fortifications cover a wide area and there are many shaded walks. The fortress gate, which is still well preserved, has been designated a historic site of the first rank.

Baimiwong Gun Emplacement

The Baimiwong Gun Emplacement is located on the upland at the west bank of Keelung Port. It was probably installed more than 300 years ago during the Spanish and Holland colonial periods and is thus also known as the "Gun Emplacement of Fort Holland." It was once occupied by French troops during the Sino-French War. The Japanese colonial government remodeled the place to become the way it looks today.

Among all the gun emplacements still exist in Taiwan, this is the only one that has a shape of a rectangular platform and is listed one of the country's third-class historical sites. However, there is no cannon at the site today. The vestiges of four platforms and fragments of wall are all that is left. While the command post at the left side of the emplacement has been remodeled, the observation post at the right side can be reached by taking the stone steps next to a pavilion. The view up here is magnificent, with the earth and sky spreading out to form a harmonious picture.

Lovers Lake Park/Dawulun Gun Emplacement

Lovers Lake is located on Dawulun Mountain and is the convergence point of several mountain creeks. It is the only mountainous lake in Keelung. Surrounded by dense forests and equipped with walk facilities around the mountain and at the side of the lake, it is a popular retreat for stroll, sightseeing and picnic in suburban Keelung.

The Dawulun Gun Emplacement, which is about 10 minutes drive from Lovers Lake, used to be an important bastion of western Keelung. The Ching Dynasty deployed soldiers here during the Opium War between China and the United Kingdom in 1840 and during the Sino-French War in 1884. It is now listed as one of Taiwan's second-class historical sites.

The high altitudes of the emplacement make it a perfect site for sightseeing.

Through integrated development of the surrounding architecture, portside parks, as well as aquatic business and ocean tourism, a new harbor landscape will be remade to be closer to the general public.

Badouzih Fishing Port / Wangyou Valley

Badouzih is located southeast of Heping Island, which was originally an isolated island but became more like a peninsula after a power plant was built on the island. This has made the famous Wangyou Valley and Badouzih Coastal Park more accessible than it was before.

The Badouzih Fishing Port was established in 1975 and is the largest fishing port in northern Taiwan. The village next to the port, where the gelidium amansii sea weed and fishing huts are seen everywhere, is a well-known fish-processing workshop in Taiwan.
