Denver Performing Arts Complex

The Denver Performing Arts Complex (sometimes referred to locally as "The Plex" or simply, "Denver Center") located in Denver, Colorado, is the second largest performing arts complex in the world after New York City's Lincoln Center, and the largest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere. The DPAC is a four-block, 12-acre site containing ten performance spaces with over 10,000 seats connected by an 80 ft. tall glass roof. It is home to a Tony Award-winning theatre company, Broadway touring productions, contemporary dance and ballet, magnificent chorales, a major symphony orchestra, internationally-acclaimed opera and more.

The City and County of Denver’s Theatres and Arenas Division owns and operates the three largest theatres in DPAC, the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, the Buell Theatre and Boettcher Concert Hall. These and the other facilities of the Complex •except the Ellie which is booked through TicketMaster• are managed and booked by the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA).

Opera house

An opera house is a theater building where operas are performed. The venues are usually constructed specifically with opera in mind, although other performing arts may be performed there. An example of this is the Sydney Opera House, located on Sydney Harbour. At many opera houses, the opera season is followed by a ballet season.

The first public opera house was the Teatro San Cassiano in Venice, Italy, which opened in 1637. Italy, where opera has been popular through the centuries among ordinary people as well as wealthy patrons, still has a large number of opera houses. When Henry Purcell was composing, there was no opera house in London. The first opera house in Germany was built in Hamburg 1678. Early U.S. opera houses served a variety of functions in towns and cities, hosting community dances, fairs, plays, and vaudeville shows as well as operas and other musical events.
