Adirondack Park Battle Island State Park Bear Mountain Bear Mountain Bridge Fast Facts

Adirondack Park

The Adirondack Park boundary, commonly referred to as the "Blue Line," contains the entire Adirondack Mountain range as well as some surrounding areas. The park includes all of Hamilton and Essex counties, as well as considerable portions of Clinton, Franklin, Herkimer, St. Lawrence and Warren counties and small sections of Fulton, Lewis, Oneida, Saratoga and Washington counties as well. (The Clinton County towns of Altona and Dannemora, despite being entirely within the park boundary, are specifically excluded from the park by statute, however, due to the large prison facilities in both towns).

Not all of the land within the park is owned by the state, but new sections are purchased or donated frequently. The park contains the highest peaks (High Peaks) in New York State, including Mount Marcy, the highest elevation in the state. State land comprises 2.6 million acres or about 42% of the park's area, while about one million acres are classified as "wilderness" despite being neither state-purchased nor currently private-owned land. The remaining area of more than 3 million acres is privately held, but is often sparsely developed when distant from towns and hamlets and there is nearly nothing that demarks the difference between state, private and "wilderness" lands in the park. There's no marked boundary to the park, no entrance gates and no admission fee.

Battle Island State Park

Battle Island State Park is a state park located on the Oswego River in Oswego County, New York. It got its name from a battle that took place on a nearby island in the mid 18th century. The majority of the land was deeded to the state in 1916; the rest, in 1938 - at which time it was designated a state park.

The park is located on the west bank of the Oswego River, north of the City of Fulton, along New York State Highway 48.

The park offers golf, cross-country skiing, and a food concession.

Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain (formerly called Bear Hill) is one of the best-known peaks of New York's Hudson Highlands. Located mostly in Orange County's Town of Highlands, it lends its name to a nearby bridge and the state park that contains it.

Its summit, accessible by a paved road, has several roadside viewpoints, a picnic area and observatory, the Perkins Memorial Tower. It is crossed by several hiking trails as well, including the oldest section of the Appalachian Trail. The AT across Bear Mountain is currently being rebuilt and realigned by the New York - New Jersey Trail Conference to minimize erosion and improve accessibility and sustainability.

Although the name "mountain" seems a misnomer for a geographic feature just 1,284 feet above sea level, Bear Mountain has a big mountain feel to it. The steep eastern face of the mountain peers over the Hudson River, which sits at sea level. The eastern side of the mountain consists of a pile of massive boulders, often the size of houses, that culminate in a 50 foot cliff face at approximately the 1,000 foot level. A direct scramble from the shore of Hessian Lake to Perkins Memorial Drive on the summit makes for an exciting Class III hike.

Bear Mountain Bridge

The Bear Mountain Bridge is a toll suspension bridge in New York State, carrying U.S. Highways 202 and 6, as well as the Appalachian Trail, across the Hudson River between Rockland and Orange Counties to the west and Westchester and Putnam Counties to the east. The span allows connections to the Palisades Interstate Parkway and U.S. Highway 9W on the west bank of the Hudson to New York State Route 9D on the east side.

When it opened on November 27, 1924, it was the first highway bridge to cross the Hudson River south of Albany, New York and the largest suspension bridge in the world; it was also the first suspension bridge to have a concrete deck. The construction methods pioneered in building it would make possible several much larger projects to follow, including the George Washington Bridge and Golden Gate Bridge.
